Mission & History

Our Mission:

The Gordon Bubolz Nature Preserve provides educational and recreational opportunities to encourage persons of all ages to develop and practice a sound environmental ethic, which reflects an understanding and appreciation of nature.

Our History:

Imagine what this land would look like as a potato farm! The previous owners of the "Center Swamp" had this vision. Their attempts at potato farming were unsuccessful due to the swampy soil and the large amounts of rain. The land was sold to the Natural Areas Preservation Inc. to be put aside for preservation. A $33,000 donation and the dedicated group of directors purchased 488 acres of Center Swamp. By March of 1975 the preserve grew to 775 acres and was named after the founder of the Natural Areas Preservation Inc., Gordon Bubolz.
